DAYTON -- An apologetic Dameon Wesley was walked to the Montgomery County Jail by Dayton Police Detectives Tuesday morning.
"To DaWan, and Deana Culpepper, I'm sorry I took your world away from you. DaWan, that was not my intent," Wesley said to our cameras .
"I love you with all my heart, I'm still in love with you and I guess God do get his justice, and that's why I'm here right now," Wesley added.
Wesley is accused of killing 13-year-old Briona Rodgers, and critically injuring Briona's cousin, 13-year-old Alonta Culpepper.
In an exclusive interview with ABC22/FOX 45 reporter Chelby Kosto, Briona's mother DaWan Culpepper, watched the video and said his
apologies fall on deaf ears.
"He didn't care when he took my baby's life. You didn't love me then," she said. "The apology did not sound genuine and 'I'm sorry' don't change nothing," she added.
Wesley is DaWan's ex-boyfriend. She said she tried to end the relationship, and he was hurt by the break-up. When she and the girls came home from church on Sunday, he was inside her home.
"He was clearly on a mission. He was sneaking into someone's home hiding with a gun."
After the shooting that Sunday, Wesley had been on run.
Dayton Police hunted him down and found him early Tuesday morning on Prescott Avenue after he reportedly crashed an SUV.
"There's still good guys up in the joint that deserve their freedom, I'm just not one of them, I guess," Wesley added during his self-described walk of shame as he was led into jail Tuesday.
His arrest brings DaWan some peace, knowing now, he can't hurt anyone else.
"He is where he should be, which is behind bars," she said. "And him being captured is the beginning process of me healing and getting justice for my baby and my niece."
Culpepper said her niece, 13-year-old Alonta Culpepper is still in the hospital, but improving every day.
Briona Rodgers' funeral will be Monday, March 4, at Victory Deliverance Ministries in Dayton, beginning at 11 a.m.
A memorial fund has been set up under Briona Rodgers name. You can donate at any Wright-Patt Credit Union in the Miami Valley. The funds will go to cover funeral expenses for Briona.
