DAYTON - A convicted murderer just released from prison is accused of killing again. What's worse, family members say the victim was only 13 years old. It's the Dayton area's sixth homicide in less than a week.
Police want your help to catch the suspected shooter. They say Dameon Wesley, 39, is armed and dangerous. He's accused of killing one person and critically injuring another. The homicide scene Sunday afternoon was described by police as horrific.
Dead is Briona Rodgers, 13. Also injured in the shooting was Alonta Culpepper, whose age and condition was unavailable Monday morning. Briona and Alonta were cousins.
"It's a tragic situation. I've lost a little cousin that hasn't even begun to live her life. And I have another cousin that's in the hospital fighting for her life. It's sickening. Sad and sickening," said a family member of the victims, who only wanted to be identified as Robin.
Tragedy also struck this family in December when 27-year-old Frederick Rodgers Jr. was gunned down in December at his apartment on Dorham Place in Dayton. Frederick was Briona's older brother.
According to Dayton police, Wesley on Sunday shot two people inside a house on Home Avenue. They found one victim dead, the other was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
"It is an absolute shame that you can't even have a teenager that is safe out here," said community activist, Rev. Jerome McCory.
Wesley just did 20 years in prison for murder. He was released less than six months ago. He's a black man, 6'3", 550 pounds. He was last seen driving a tan, Chevy Suburban with temporary license plates. Police are releasing few details about what led up to the shooting.
Robin told us this about the mother of one of the shooting victims: "She's with an ex-boyfriend that's controlling and she wants to get out of the situation but he doesn't want to let it go. He came to do some damage to mom. Baby happened to be at the scene and went to save their mom."
Police say if you see Wesley to call 911 immediately.
