DAYTON -- A grandmother used her body as a shield Saturday night to protect her granddaughter from her own son at a home on Fernwood Avenue.
Dayton Police said they responded to a domestic violence call about 9:13 p.m. Saturday at 337 Fernwood Avenue. Police said they heard on the 911 call a woman yelling "Stop" and a male voice saying, "I'm going to get you."
When police arrived, they heard a female in the house yell very loudly, "Please help us! Please help us!" Police entered the home and saw a man standing over a woman sitting on a couch. According to police, the man was repeatedly punching her in the face. An 8-year-old girl was standing on the other side of the couch screaming for help.
The suspect was later identified as 26-year-old Michael Kendrick.
Police attempted to arrest Kendrick, who resisted. One officer eventually Tasered him, which ended the struggle.
The woman on the couch was identified as Kendrick's mother. She was unable to provide a statement at the scene because her face was bruised and swollen and she was losing consciousness.
Police did not explain the relationship between the girl and the suspect.
The woman was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital, where police took her statement.
She said her son, Michael, had been throwing bottles at the 8-year-old girl, who is the woman's granddaughter.
The woman said the girl ran to the corner of the kitchen to get away. The woman then called police, at which time Kendrick reportedly grabbed the phone from her and picked up a butcher knife.
The woman said she put herself between the girl and Kendrick. Police said Kendrick overturned some furniture and threw a can of WD-40 at the girl.
The woman said she tried to open the front door as the dispatcher had told her but Kendrick kept closing it and striking her in the face.
The girl told police Kendrick had been throwing things at her and tried to hit her but her grandmother prevented it.
Kendrick has been charged with felonious assault, endangering children, domestic violence and resisting arrest.
