DAYTON -- A tax service with several local branches is facing U.S. Justice Department and Better Business Bureau scrutiny after accusations that it is filing fraudulent returns to get customers larger refunds and take larger preparation fees.
Instant Tax Service, known as ITS Financial or TCA Financial, has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau.
The BBB reported 119 complaints, four of those serious, against the business. It also said that the business has failed to resolve underlying causes of a pattern of complaints.
The Justice Department is pursuing court action against Instant Tax Service and is trying to get the company shut down.
The Better Business Bureau offers suggestions for working with any tax preparation service.
"Be sure to go through the contract and understand everything that's in writing. Get any verbal commitments also in writing," said BBB Dayton's President John North. "Make sure you ask a lot of questions."
ITS Financial has been in business since 2000.
