DAYTON -- Carol Jaxson-Jager has been a relationship counselor for 32 years and says if you really want to have a Happy Valentines Day, DO spend some meaningful quality time.
"Don't assume that person knows how you feel. That person is not a mind reader make time for that person compromise with that person," she said. "Being there is the most important thing and sending that person a text message three times a day or 50 times a day is not the same add looking at them face to face."
Texting would definitely be a DON'T. However, DO consider a thoughtful gift.
"I was getting something for my sweetie for Valentines Day wanted to get her something nice so she knows I'm thinking about her all the time," said James Brown of Dayton.
When you're trying to pick that perfect gift for that special person to show them that you love them, think of the realities of the relationship. What does the person like? How long have you been dating?
"A small box of chocolates or small token gift is appropriate. But if you've been dating somebody for six years then a $0.50 box of chocolate is not appropriate so you have to go by how your relationship is going.
DON'T wait until the last minute.
"Guys have no clue they want to see something that you can put together for them," said Brian Smith of Ed Smith's flower shop.
Finally Don't use Valentines Day to make up for messing up throughout the rest of the year.
"Some people do believe that if I get something good then everything will be okay but a big box of beautiful flowers will not make up for the fact that that person knows you cheated on them or stole from them," said Jaxson-Jager. "What you need to do is stop the bad behavior."
For the woman, Jaxson-Jager says don't just sit back and wait for a gift. Feel free to get that special guy in your life something that he can appreciate.
