Re-Freeze Among Road Crews Biggest Concern Monday Night

DAYTON -- With all the melting on Monday (Jan. 26, 2015) the concern is re-freezing for Monday night after a wintry mix left a layer of ice and snow in much of the Miami Valley.

"It's a little heavy underneath, wet, it was at one complete sheet of ice... but luckily the sun has solved that problem," explained John Blaney, while shoveling the stubborn ice from his sidewalk out front.

Plus, that fiery ball in the sky just feels good.

"It's nice, especially after a time of gloom, gets a little depressing.

The sun also helped Dayton road crews working to clear the main drags and heavily used secondary roads. But it was slow going.

"Even though you're in a big truck with a plow and loaded with salt, you can slide just like the motoring public can," explained Kevin Buck, who drives a plow and salt truck for the city of Dayton.

On some roads, the snow pack is kept in place on purpose, so drivers would have some traction given the sheet of ice below.

"doesn't look like we're going to have an opportunity to break them up and de ice them if we got in there right now, and try to salt them and plow them, it would probably just make them worse," said Jim Brinegar, the Street Maintenance Division Manage.

"You know with the limited amount of salt we have, it makes fighting the snow and ice a lot harder," Buck explained. "You know we just do what we can to make the roads safe and passable for the motoring public."

Ice, like Monday night's re-freeze, is always the biggest culprit.

"It causes a lot of problems on these narrow, one-way streets because a lot of times, they don't salt them," Blaney said.
