NEW YORK -- Airlines have canceled flights at major hubs in the northeast, as a major nor'easter blows through.

The massive storm is expected to drop between two and three feet of snow in some areas as cities across the northeast are doing what they can to get ready.

Forecasters expect something out of the ordinary.

"My message to all New Yorkers is prepare for something worse than we have seen before," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

More than 1,500 snow plows will be on the streets of New York City, trying to keep thousands of miles of roads clear amid what could be a historic snow storm.

"This is going to be an incredibly difficult storm for us to fight," said Kathryn Garcia, New York Sanitation Commissioner said.

The National Weather Service expects between two and three feet of snow in parts of New York and Boston by the time the snow stops falling. The agency issued blizzard and winter storm warnings from New Jersey to Maine and into Canada.

At hardware stores and grocers across the northeast  people are grabbing shovels and ice melt, fueling up, loading up on firewood and whatever groceries they can get their hands on.

Expecting very long delays, airlines -- including Delta and United airlines -- have already canceled hundreds of flights at major hubs in the northeast.

Meanwhile, power companies prepare for inevitable outages as tree limbs, snapped by heavy snow, fall on power lines. But despite the preparations and warnings of a potentially "historic" storm, some people will always remain skeptical.

"I'll believe it when I see it, I guess. I'm hoping maybe it won't be as bad as they say,"one New Yorker said.
