Troopers, Deputies Honored for Response After I-75 Shooting

COLUMBUS (AP) -- Six law enforcement officers are receiving a top award from Ohio's State Highway Patrol leader for their actions in approaching a Kentucky murder suspect in a scene that shut down a highway.

Four troopers and two Butler County sheriff's deputies were scheduled Monday, Jan. 26, to get the Superintendent's Citation of Merit Award. A patrol spokesman says it's a rare honor typically recognizing people who put their safety at risk to protect others.

This case involved a man accused of kidnapping his estranged girlfriend and fatally shooting her 17-year-old son. Authorities heard gunshots while approaching the suspect's stopped vehicle along Interstate 75 north of Cincinnati on Sept. 12. They found the woman dead inside.

The suspect had a self-inflicted gunshot wound but survived. He pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated murder.
