AURORA -- Jury selection began Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015 in the death penalty mass murder trial of James Holmes.
Holmes is accused of shooting and killing 12 people inside a Colorado movie theater which included Springfield native Matt McQuinn.
9,000 potential jurors have been summonsed, 12 of them will ultimately decide whether or not Holmes was insane at the time he opened fire.
A reporter posed the question Tuesday, "What's the appropriate punishment for this guy? Death."
Holmes has undergone two sanity evaluations so far.
His parents recently released a statement pleading for their son's life to be spared and said he is not a monster. They went on to say he is a human being gripped by a severe mental illness.
