CINCINNATI -- The Ohio Department of Transportation provided a timeline today of the events surrounding the collapse of the Hopple Street overpass.

According to ODOT, the bridge collapsed onto the southbound lanes I-75 about 10:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19. At that time, a Kokosing Construction employee was on the bridge deck. He died, ODOT said, from injuries sustained during the fall. Cincinnati police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.

Prior to the collapse, Kokosing -- the company contracted to demolish the overpass and perform other work in the area -- was working to demolish and remove the bridge and lane closures were in place, beginning at 9 p.m., so crews could remove concrete deck from the structural steel.

The bridge that collapsed had been closed permanently in December when a new ramp opened to traffic.

ODOT engineers and pavement inspectors were on scene Tuesday morning to assess the damage, while traffic is being rerouted off of stretches of I-75 and I-74 until the scene is cleared.
