CENTERVILLE -- A home health care company is taking extra steps to make sure seniors avoid the flu.

"Visiting Angels" specializes in senior care and Monday, Jan. 19, 2015 when they came to visit their clients, they didn't come empty-handed.

Nancy Johnson checks on 85-year-old Centerville resident, Ken Hahn several times a week after he suffered a stroke to help him rehabilitate.

"We at Visiting Angels do what we can to keep our clients healthy and safe," said Johnson.

One of their goals right now is helping those they care for do all they can to fight off the flu. The caregivers are now distributing flu prevention kits. The kits also contain things like paper towels, water, tissue, soap and disinfectant along with instructions that may seem elementary but could save lives.

Johnson said she enjoys her job and does what she can to make her clients comfortable including running errands so seniors who are more vulnerable to illnesses do not have to be exposed to crowds that could make them sick. "We at visiting angels encourage our seniors to drink plenty of water. If you get a fever of over 102 it might indicate that you might be suffering from the flu."

Ken Hahn said he looks forward to the visits from his home health care specialist. "It's been a real pleasure working with Nancy, I hope she can say the same of me."

"My task here is to clean, to make sure things are clean and sanitary to keep up the healthy piece of it to make sure he is fine," said Johnson.

Helping seniors avoid the flu this season is more important than ever because this year's flu shot is only about 23 percent effective against all flu strains and doctors says 90 percent of flu related death and hospitalizations involve people 65 and older.
