COLUMBUS -- Police say the man shot and killed at Port Columbus this month may have been trying to hijack a plane.
Detectives with the city’s counterterrorism task force filed a search warrant Tuesday to go through Hashim Abdul-Rasheed's computers, voicemails, and text messages.
Police say Abdul-Rasheed drove to Port Columbus last Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, left his car in a restricted area and went to the Southwest Airlines ticket counter. They say he tried to buy a ticket with a woman's ID, and Southwest staff refused the sale. That's when police followed Abdul-Rasheed back to his car.
They say he went after officers with a knife, and the officers shot and killed him.
The search warrant indicates police found two lock blade-style knives taped to the inside of his legs, concealed by his trousers. Inside his car, police say Abdul-Rasheed had masks, more knives, a gas mask, and multiple computers and tablets.
Officials at Port Columbus are no longer commenting about the case, but a spokeswoman for Southwest Airlines released a statement Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 14) to ABC 6/FOX 28:
“All airline employees are expected to maintain a high level of awareness for actions that might be deemed suspicious in nature and are encouraged to report those concerns to the proper authorities out of an abundance of caution. In the event referenced, the passenger initially produced a form of identification that did not belong to him and after an unusual exchange did not have sufficient funds to purchase a ticket.”
