Kasich Promotes Tax Plan During Dayton Visit

DAYTON -- Ohio Gov. John Kasich rolled into East Dayton on Thursday to push his proposed roll-back of state taxes.

Speaking to a group of business people, some of whom took part in a roundtable discussion, Kasich outlined his plan that  includes a 20 percent cut in income taxes for all Ohioans, a 50 percent cut for most small business income taxes, and a cut in the state sales tax, from 5.5 percent to 5 percent.

However, critics object to the expansion of the sales tax from goods to most services. They claim less well off people may not benefit from an income tax cut, while they will pay more for a sales tax on services -- from lawyers to laundromats.

The tax cuts would be paid for in part by a tax increase on Ohio oil and gas drillers.

Kasich says the broad aim to make small businesses more competitive by lowering their tax and regulatory burdens.

The General Assembly now has to hold hearings. A vote on the budget is expected before July 1
