Trees Tapped for Maple Syrup

GREENE COUNTY -- The temperatures were just right in the Miami Valley today to make maple syrup.  In fact, Thursday marked the start of maple sugaring season.

Naturalists from Greene County Parks and Trails drilled holes in trees and hung buckets, catching the gooey stuff that dripped from the trees.  The sugary sap will only flow if it's as warm as today, which is close to 50 degrees.

"If you look at the ingredients of most syrup, it's actually made from corn which is much cheaper, and there's all kinds of weird stuff on there that you can't pronounce that's been added to it.'' Mel Grosvenor, a Greene County naturalist told us. ''With maple sugar, it's pure...all you do is remove water."

The maple syrup harvested today will be bottled and served at a pancake breakfast the first Saturday in March at Bellbrook Middle School.
