Air Force Sequestration Calls for Furloughs, Reduced Flying Time; Turner Calls it Troubling

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE -- ABC 22/FOX 45 has obtained a copy of the U.S. Air Force Sequestration Implementation Plan, which outlines the proposal for cuts, which includes civilian furloughs and reduced flying hours.

According to the plan, which is termed "predecisional," the sequester would lead to a "potential furlough of about 180,000 civilians for 22 days, which equates to about 20 percent loss in bi-weekly pay to each furloughed civilian.

The plan also proposes reduced flying time by 18 percent and reducing "weapon system sustainment" by the same amount, which would impact the C-17 (which is the primary airplane based at Wright-Patt) as well as the A-10, C-130, KC-135, F-15, F-16, B-52 and E-8 JSTARS.

Congressman Mike Turner, Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces, said the proposal is "highly troubling news."

"Sequestration will affect mission readiness and our deployed personnel around the globe," Turner said. "Civilian furloughs will delay systems testing – ultimately increasing end costs to the taxpayer and the amount of time it takes to deliver equipment to our warfighters."

We'll have local reaction to this proposal tonight on ABC 22 News at 6 and FOX 45 News at 6:30.
