DAYTON-- A retired Dayton postal worker had his home burglarized on his 66th birthday, and priceless, sentimental items were stolen.
"It's heart breaking." Ron Garret told ABC 22/FOX 45 news reporter Chelby Kosto. "At first it makes you mad, then it makes you want to cry." He said.
Garrett left for breakfast to celebrate his birthday with family about 9:30 Sunday morning. He came back to his Grove Avenue home to find his back door damaged.
"They used a crow bar or some kind of screw driver to pry it open. They went upstairs, poured everything out of my jewelry box, and turned
drawers upside down, looking for stuff ." He said.
Thieves stole his money and jewelry, but what pains him he most; thieves stole his deceased wife's items.
Jessie Elaine Garrett died from lung cancer eight years ago.
"They took her dresses. Why would they do that? How much value could they be?"
Garrett knows thieves are willing to break into homes in broad daylight, and he wants to warn his neighbors.
"Keep your doors locked. Get a big dog, and get a gun."
Garrett is now putting in a security system.
"You've got to protect your house. You've got to protect your family."
