SPRINGFIELD -- Ohio is the third worst state in the country when it comes to the disparity between white and black graduates. With an 80 percent graduation rate 85 percent of them are white and only 59 percent of them are black.
Pamela Moss has a daughter who has graduated from high school and knows the importance of her involvement.
"A lot of us don't support our kids in their academic because we work and were busy with our lives. but it's very important to be involved especially when they're young," said Moss.
Ohio has one of the lowest high-school graduation rates for black students, but one of the better rates for white students.
"I think that's very sad all children need an education to do well in life and it shouldn't matter the skin color," said Kelli Blazer of Springfield.
However that's not the case in the Miami Valley. Three of the biggest school districts.: Dayton, Springfield, Huber Heights each are graduating a higher percentage of black students than white.
"Our concern is that we have more students ready to graduate," said Springfield superintendent David Estrop.
Since Springfield City Schools doesn't have to worry about the disparity between black and white students they are able to focus more time on getting all of the students a diploma.
"I'm very pleased with the balance of the two, but both of those numbers need to grow. and they will," said Estrop.
Springfield offers many after school programs and has a lot of volunteers. They hope to be a model for the rest of the schools in Ohio.
"I'm very displeased as an African American citizen education is the key to success no matter what I mean that is so important that's the best gift as a parent you can give your child because that's going to set the tone for their whole life," said Moss.
Iowa had the top overall graduation rate, while Nevada had the lowest.
