Keeping You Safe; How to Defend Yourself from an Attacker

DAYTON -- The recent sexual assault and abduction of a Kettering woman are constant reminders for women to always be ready to protect yourself if you get into a similar situation.

Reporter, Annette Peagler went to Tenbears Martial Arts Academy to learn some basic self-defense moves.

Angel Burke, an instructor at Tenbears walks home by herself from school and work often. Burke said she was tired of walking in fear, so she decided to learn martial arts.

“It was really important just because I didn't want to be attacked by anybody it's not real safe on the streets at night,” Burke said.

For the last two years, Burke has been learning and now teaching women and men how to defend themselves.

At the school, there are specific classes for everyone.

"Women we put them in the worst case scenarios and they have the ability and the power to do something different when they're placed in the worst case scenarios and that's probably a woman's worst fear is thinking that they have to succumb to an attacker," said Jim Rosenthal, owner of Tenbears Martial Arts Academy.

Here are some important tips. If your attacker is a male, always aim for the groin. Make sure you are always aware of your surroundings. Never walk with your head down and carry mace. These are valuable tips that may save your life – like it did for Angel.

“I’m just prepared.  I have martial arts and the techniques and stuff that I need to know to be protected,” said Burke.

If you want to start learning martial arts, Tenbears is offering a free 30 day trial. If you are interested, click here or call 937-974-5529.
