DAYTON -- The bitter cold temperatures have made igloos of many homes and the only things freezing inside may not just be the occupants. Your pipes are susceptible as well.
To prevent a bad situation from becoming worse, there are some simple steps people can take to ensure the free-flow of water through their piping system. Open cabinet doors under facets so as to let warm air inside. Also, you can let a small stream of water flow overnight when temperatures dip to dangerous levels. And don't forget about outside faucets.
"Being warm this weekend you had a lot of people that probably washed their car, or cleaned off the driveway to get the salt off," said plumber David Wolfe. "They may have forgotten to take that garden hose off the outside faucet. You want to make sure you get that disconnected right away."
And experts say that doors to utility rooms, laundry rooms or showers should be left open as well.
