ZANESVILLE -- A police officer is facing disciplinary action after he was caught sleeping in his cruiser while on duty Thursday morning.

Police say Officer Kyle Brooks was monitoring traffic in downtown Zanesville on 6th St. when he fell asleep for approximately 15 minutes.

A photo taken of Brooks while sleeping has gone viral.

Zanesville Police Chief Eric Lambes said Brooks immediately acknowledged what happened.

"The officer was very forthright, very apologetic," said Lambes. "He fell asleep. He was sitting there watching traffic, doing what he was supposed to be doing, and he just fell asleep."

Lambes said Brooks just moved to the overnight shift the week before. Although he says that is not meant to be an excuse for what happened.

Brooks will face disciplinary action, but will not lose his job.

"He's a good officer. We get good reports on him," Chief Lambes said. "He's not a problem officer and there's no history of discipline, so he'll learn from it. We will get beyond it."
