Salt Trucks Preparing for New Year's Eve Snow

DAYTON--The city has about eleven thousand tons of salt for the winter season. They've already used three thousand which is more than what they've used last year.  Two thousand tons were used just for the winter storm we had the day after Christmas.

Since it is New Years Eve, many people are expected to be on the roads traveling tonight, and the expected snow will make roads slick.

"What I've done is asked employees to be able to do a double shift so the normal end time today was 3:30pm. I asked all the drivers to stay over, perhaps be here until midnight or sometimes less than that. I'm hoping its less their giving up their celebration to be here and make sure everyone else can get to the parties and get back home safely," said Public Works Director Fred Stovall.

Stovall said he did require most of his drivers to take off the plows on the trucks because of the little amount of snow we are getting, plus it is easier to melt the snow with just the trucks than it is to plow.
