SPRINGBORO -- Schools across the Miami Valley are now trying to ensure parents that their kids are safe.
Centerville City Schools made sure kids had counselors at every school building when they got to school Monday morning.
And in Springboro, at Clearcreek Elementary, Springboro Police and Clearkcreek Township Police passed out candy canes to kindergartners as they walked into school.
"They love to see policemen any way, but it makes them feel secure," said Gloria Huff, grandparent.
Friday's tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut is on Gloria HUff's mind as she dropped off her grandkids.
"You think about it and worry that it's, hopefully it would never happen to him but it makes your stomach jittery," she said.
Which is exactly why the Springoboro School District sent out an email to parents.
It reassured them that they have safety measures already in place, including exterior and interior doors that lock.
"Nice to know that this school does a good job of protecting the kids and not letting just anybody in," said Huff.
In Centerville, as kids at Cline Elementary were dismissed for the day, parents were happy to find out the district had counselors on hand at every school.
"Children that age can hide things keep them inside and they need to be able to talk about them and explain that they are safe in their school buildings," said Carol Johnson, grandparent.
While parents are happy that local school are taking steps to keep kids here safe, tonight, the victims in Connecticut are still on their minds.
"It's really sad and I hope that you know, now they're safe," said Huff.
We called Dayton Public Schools to see if they did anything different today. They told us the emailed their safety plans to teachers and school principals, once again reminding them of what to do in an emergency.
