UPDATE: Two Men Rushed To Hospital After Sparklers in Pipe Explodes

DAYTON -- Two men are rushed to Miami Valley Hospital after stuffing sparklers into a pipe on the 100 block of Lawncrest Ave.

Deputies say as the men were scraping the residue off of the sparklers, the pipe exploded.

That explosion sent shrapnel flying toward the men. The metal got stuck in one of the victim's legs and blew off some of his fingers.

One man remains in serious condition. The other man was treated and released. At this point officers are not saying if the men will be charged.

This type of injury from fireworks happens more than many people think. On Thursday, a man in Washington was seriously injured after making a sparkler bomb.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 200 people on average last year went to the emergency room every day around July 4. There were six firework-related deaths in 2012, all caused by illegal, homemade fireworks. About 74 percent of those injured were male.

DAYTON -- Two men were rushed to the hospital Thursday night after a homemade firework blows up in their face. Sheriff deputies tell us they were stuffing sparklers into a metal tube, when one of them went off and exploded.
Shrapnel reportedly flew from the pole and got stuck in one of the man's legs.  It also blew off two of his fingers. He was taken to Miami Valley hospital in serious condition.

The other man was taken to the hospital but has since been released.
