SPRINGBORO -- The U.S. Constitution is the one document that lists all of our freedoms, but some Springboro parents didn't want certain groups teaching it in their community and they got their wish.
The Springboro School Board cancelled summer classes being offered to the public on the U.S. Constitution.
David Bowman has two kids in the Springboro School District and he tries to attend every board meeting. He was concerned with the board's decision to have those courses.
"Some of those resources seemed to be a bit troubling when you do some basic research on them and not appropriate at all for a public school setting," said Bowman.
Many parents we spoke with believe the groups teaching those classes have a religious and tea party leaning political agenda. They voiced their concerns at the board meeting last week. The board listened and cancelled the courses until further notice.
"I'm happy with that decision I glad that common sense has triumph over politics and from a parents perspective and a tax payer perspective I think they made the right decision to cancel those courses," said Bowman.
However, some parents didnt' see anything wrong with the classes and would like the curriculum eventually brought into the classroom.
"I don't think they can act on it and know the true basis of the founding of this country without studying it and learning for themselves and let them make the decision but it should be as the constitution is written and not taken apart piece by piece," said Geri Walker from Springboro.
Board members say they want to look further into the community's concerns. Parents like Bowman says this proves democracy still exists.
"Today on the 4th of July we're happy to celebrate democracy as all the people of Springboro and it's nice to see that people can exercise their first amendment right and make change happen," he said.
