MANSFIELD (AP) -- Authorities say an inmate escaped from a north-central Ohio prison where he was incarcerated for kidnapping, rape and other crimes.

Law enforcement officers were searching Thursday for James David Myers. He was found to be missing from the Mansfield Correctional Institution during a head count on Wednesday night, his 47th birthday.

Police released no details of how he escaped the facility, which houses about 2,500 inmates, most of them under what the prisons department calls "close security." A message to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction wasn't immediately returned.

The former Mogadore resident was imprisoned in 2010 on charges out of northeast Ohio's Summit County. Those charges included kidnapping, rape and aggravated burglary.

Authorities in Mansfield were seeking anyone with information about his whereabouts.
