WASHINGTON-- Junk food will no longer be served in vending machines at your kid's school. Under the new USDA rules candy bars will be replaced with granola bars, and regular potato chips will be exchanged with baked chips. They will also switch their drink options from sports drinks to 100% fruit juice.
The Agriculture Department announced Thursday, that for the first time it will make sure that all foods sold in the nation's 100,000 schools are healthier by expanding fat, calorie, sugar and sodium limits to almost everything sold during the school day.
The rules were required under a child nutrition law passed by Congress in 2010. These changes expect to go into effect during the 2014-15 school year.
