LIBERTY TWP. -- A Miami Valley Tea Party group has joined a class action lawsuit against the federal government. The Liberty Township Tea Party is one of 41 conservative groups suing the IRS for unconstitutional targeting.

The Inspector General busted the IRS for secretly targeting certain conservative groups who applied for tax-exempt status. The Liberty Township Tea Party is one of those groups that Tuesday decided to fight back and sue the IRS.

The American Center for Law and Justice filed the lawsuit which takes a federal agency that's currently at the center of a whirlwind of controversy. The IRS is in hot water for spending millions of your tax dollars on lavish conferences and targeting hundreds of conservative groups by questioning their non-profit status.

"I don't trust them," said Tim Savaglio, Liberty Township Tea Party Board member.

Savaglio says his group is proud to be on the class action lawsuit against the IRS.

"You cannot have an IRS where you question their motives," he said.

Savaglio said newly released IRS claims that the agency also targeted progressive groups is likely bogus.

"I think it's extremely suspicious. You have to think if that were true, at least one group would have come forward," he said.

In fact, all 41 groups suing the IRS are conservative, mainly Tea Party and pro-life organizations.

The 44-page lawsuit does seek an unspecified amount of damages. But Savaglio says it's not about the money. They want to make sure the IRS isn't able to target groups ever again.

"You really have to go into a courtroom to get everything out in the open. At least that's how we feel," Savaglio said.

The lawsuit aims to force the IRS to explain who ordered the targeting, and why. The Liberty Township Tea Party also wants protection from what members are calling future IRS abuse or retaliation.

More groups could join the class action lawsuit.
