Big Retail Theft Ring Busted

MIAMI TOWNSHIP --  A massive theft ring busted here in the Miami Valley, police say the thieves were stealing up to $75,000 worth of stuff a month.

Three homes were raided today, all in Trotwood.  As officers were collecting evidence, the yard of some of the homes filled with big screen TVs, cameras and air conditioning units.

A Miami Township investigation uncovered the organized theft ring.  Investigators say members of the group would load up carts and roll them right out of the open air garden centers of stores like Walmart and Meijer and then load up their loot in a U-Haul waiting outside.

Police say they finally got the break they needed to bust this ring, ''It was some of the employees that put us on track of these people, they shared information and pictures.'' Sgt. Scott Fitzgerald from the Miami Township Police department told us.

The thieves would steal from stores, not only in Miami Township, but also Huber Heights and Richmond, Indiana.  The crooks then sold or traded the stolen merchandise for heroin.

Tonight on FOX45 News at 10 and ABC22 News at 11, find out about a new law that's made the punishment for this type of organized crime much harsher.
