DAYTON -- Matthew Madden of Kettering was sentenced Tuesday to 11 years in prison for three robberies.
Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck Jr. said the first robbery Madden is accused of occurred on December 2, 2012, when Madden, 55, robbed a 72âyearâold woman in the parking lot of the China Cottage, located on Far Hills Avenue in Centerville. Madden forcibly grabbed the victimâs purse from her, knocking her to the ground in the process.
The second robbery was on December 17, 2012, of Jaffe Jewelers, on Far Hills Avenue in Kettering. Near the end of the business day, Madden reportedly entered the store wearing a mask and gloves. He displayed a weapon at store employees and stole jewelry and cash, Heck said.
On December 20, 2012, Heck said Madden entered the WesBanco Bank on South Smithville Road in Kettering. He reportedly pointed a gun at the tellers and made them lay on the ground while he emptied the tellersâ cash drawers. The defendant unknowingly took bait money that was equipped with a tracking device, which allowed police to stop him minutes later, with the money in his car.
âThis defendant was incarcerated from 1978 to 1984 for a robbery conviction," Heck said. "He was convicted of aggravated burglary and was again incarcerated from 2001 to 2008. Our community is safer with this career criminal locked up.â
