Abortion Waiting Period Expansion Proposed

COLUMBUS -- The waiting period for an abortion in Ohio would be extended under a bill introduced in the legislature this week.

House Bill 200, which is supported by 35 Republican lawmakers, would require a woman to wait two days for the procedure. The current wait time is one day.

Sponsors and supporters of the measure say the goal is to give women more time and information.

"Give her a chance to go home, reflect -- if she's a person of faith, pray -- to talk to parents, to talk to the church," said Michael Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life.
Opponents of the measure say the 48-hour waiting period is meant to make it more difficult to get the procedure, and a provision that would compel the doctor to give a detailed verbal description of an ultrasound is meant to shame women.

The bill would also require doctors to tell women how much money they make from abortions, tighten restrictions on medical waivers, and compel providers to advise women of an increased risk of breast cancer.

"There is no correlation between, for example, abortion and breast cancer. The Komen Foundation and the American Cancer Foundation have said that's simply not true, so they're actually in the process of legislating lies about our healthcare," said Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio president and CEO Stephanie Kight.
