TROTWOOD -- Dozens of residents are without a home after their apartment building is destroyed by fire Thursday. The fire started just before 8 pm at the Woodland Hills Apartments in Trotwood.
Firefighters say the fire started in a second floor apartment and quickly spread. Luckily everyone was able to get out safely.
Residents were home at the time. They called 911, reporting smoke coming out of the ceiling of a closet. When firefighters arrived, they had to evacuate neighboring buildings because the fire was already so massive. Crews from six departments were needed to fight the flames. It's unclear how the fire started. The Fire Marshal will be here Friday morning to figure that out. At one point, part of the roof collapsed into the burning building.
"It's crazy to see something like that. You see it in movies. But I've never seen anything like this. It's crazy," said Woodland Hills resident Da'Michael Guy.
"The firefighters had to come out due to heat and smoke. We are not going to risk their lives on something that isn't manageable from that point," said Trotwood Fire Chief Steve Milliken.
Firefighters say the building is destroyed. The complex is relocating displaced residents into vacant apartments. The Red Cross has also been called to help out.

TROTWOOD -- Just before 8 pm, residents on the second floor noticed heavy smoke coming out of a closet; they were able to escape unharmed.
Although there were no major injuries, one person suffered from minor smoke inhalation and was treated on the scene.
The building has been destroyed, in addition to a partial roof collapse.
Trotwood Fire Chief Stephen Milliken says this is "one of the largest fires we've seen in our city."
Crews brought in 75% more equipment and personnel than they would for a normal fire.
There is no word yet on how the fire started
The fire marshal will be there tomorrow to investigate.
