Surprising Germy Kitchen Items

DAYTON -- We spend a lot of time in our kitchens; after all, it's the one place that often brings families together.

But, there are things in your kitchen attracting a host of germs that you probably wouldn't even realize.

In a new study from NSF International, a non-profit health and safety organization, they found germs such as E.Coli, Salmonella, Listeria, mold and yeast on common items.

They took 20 families and swabbed 14 different kitchen items.

The most obvious culprits are sponges and sinks.

But, after that you may be surprised.

Like a knife block.

When was the last time you cleaned it? If ever?

You should be washing the block in hot soapy water.

Then there's the gasket and blade to a blender.

NSF says you should be following the manufacturer's cleaning instructions or else you may be blending in bacteria with your food.

They say you should clean your blade and gasket after every time you use it.

Some other surprisingly germy items:

- Can opener -- most people just throw it back in the drawer
- Meat & vegetable drawers should be cleaned out once a month
- Spatulas -- if you don't remove the rubber tip from your spatula, chances are food exits in between
