DAMASCUS, Syria -- The two-year civil war in Syria just got more interesting. The European Union is opening the way for members like Great Britain to start arming rebels trying to topple the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
The White House is still trying to start peace talks between Assad and the rebels, but Republican Sen. John McCain, who just visited Syria, wants America to back the rebels, particularly after reports that Assad has used chemical weapons.
However, other GOP senators, such as Kentucky's Rand Paul, caution against America getting mired in another war and backing rebels who may be Islamic radicals.
