Quick Look At Fast Food

UNDATED -- These days even fast-food chains are allowing nutritional information to be readily available.

There are several numbers that are very important when noting nutritional information: calories from fat and total fat grams.

Our sister station examined the menus of some popular restaurants to find out if the fat and calories listed on the menu are accurate.

Patricia Wynkoop, Wendy's Director of Technical Services and Quality Assurance says, "we're pretty confident with out numbers."  Wynkoop says all major fast-food chains do nutritional studies with third-party labs on a regular basis.

To ensure the company's nutritional information are consistent at all locations, Wynkoop says employees are trained about portion control.

Our sister station ABC 6 investigated some of these nutritional claims.

They bought two low-fat items from five major fast-food chains.
All of their samples were placed in plastic collection bags, packed in a styrofoam cooler with dry ice and shipped overnight to Kappa Laboratories in Miami, Florida.

We hired Kappa to test our samples for calories from fat and total fat grams.

It's important to note that Kappa Laboratories margin of error in this study in a plus or minus 20%.

Bottom line: the lab's numbers are nearly dead-on with nutritional claims by these 5 fast-food restaurants.
