DAYTON -- The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is trying to figure out how a two-month-old chihuahua was stolen from its kennel.
President of the shelter, Brian Weltge, says they think whoever stole Betty entered through a back entrance.
They admit they don't have high security. But, say they are there to protect animals and they never thought someone would do so.
"It's very unusual that someone would have access to any other part of our building without going through the front first," he said.
Betty the Chihuahua is so small, she could have been taken easily if someone tucked her under a coat or put her in a purse.
Weltge says they're looking into a secure gate but they are pricey and they are a non-profit organization.
Dogs being stolen happens more often than you think. Last year there was a 70% rise in dog theft. That's according to the American Kennel Club.
The reasons vary buy many times it for monetary reasons.
The most common place for a dog-nap is from your car. The American Kennel Club reports it takes only 20 seconds for a dog to be taken for a car.
Dogs left in fenced yards are also at high risk.
Experts say always stay outside with your dog.
If you have any information on Betty call 947-268-PETS.
