WEST CARROLLTON--A 70 year old man has been indicted in the shooting death of his son's girlfriend.
Friday, a grand jury indicted Ira Perkins, 70 of west carrollton with 1 count of reckless homicide.
Last Friday, Perkins and his son were arguing when he grabbed a handgun and fired a shot into a nearby stairwell wall.
According to authorities what Perkins didn't realize at the time, is that his son's girlfriend 25 year Brittany Geiger was on the other side of the wall.
The bullet travelled through the wall and struck Geiger in the head, killing her.
Reckless Homicide is a third degree felony which carries a possible three year sentence. This case will face an additional mandatory three years because the defendant used a firearm.
West Carrollton Police Chief Richard Barnhart said, âThis certainly was a tragedy in our city, and shows why people are not permitted to discharge firearms within the city. People should always be aware of their surroundings if they are going to handle firearms.â
Prosecutor Heck added, âGun ownership requires persons to act responsibly and not discharge a deadly weapon so recklessly and without regard for the consequences.â
Perkins remains in the Montgomery County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
He is set to be arraigned on May 14, 2013 at 8:30 a.m.
