GREENVILLE -- We're learning more tonight about a two week old infant who suffered serious injuries including two broken legs, two broken arms and three ribs.
Greenville Police Detective Eric Roberts says the child sustained those injuries for at least two days before being taken to Wayne Health Care in Greenville.
The hospital had the baby transported to Dayton Children's Medical Center because of the extent of the injuries. That's when Greenville authorities were notified about the incident.
Roberts says the newborn also sustained bruising and bleeding to the brain and spine. The 20-year-old mother and 21-year-old father who live at this Hunter Oaks Apartment Complex are at the center of the investigation..
"In this case there was only two people caring for the child while the child was alive," said Detective Roberts.
As of right now those parents, who police won't identify, are not behind bars..
The case is in the hands of the Darke County prosecutor. The father could face felonious assault and the mother child endangerment.
"I felt the best process would be to go through a grand jury process and let them review the matter," said Detective Roberts.
Detective Roberts says last he heard the baby was out of the hospital in casts.
"There's so many resources where you can take these children, if you don't want them don't hurt them," said Greenville resident, Tess Coones.
Detective Roberts says he don't know what led to the child being beaten but said frustration could have been at the center, "that's no excuse for it," he said.
The baby is in foster care with the Darke County Children and Family Services.
