MIAMI TWP. -- According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the pilot in a March 12 plane crash said he tried to activate the runway lights at the Wright Brothers Airport in hopes of landing, but the lights wouldn't activate.

Douglas Morgan told investigators he tried to find another airport at which to land but the plane ran out of fuel first.

"The pilot then attempted to locate another airport in which he flew into class C and class D airspace without clearance," the NTSB Record of Conversation reads. "At several points in the flight, the pilot entered instrument meteorological conditions without clearance.

Subsequently, the document reads, the airplane ran out of fuel, and the pilot executed a forced landing.

"During the forced landing, the airplane impacted power lines and brush covered terrain. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and both wings," the document reads.

The document said Morgan did not hold a current medical certificate or flight review, and the airplane's annual inspection was not current.

The FAA also said Morgan admitted to first responders he had been drinking alcohol before the flight.

"In addition, during a telephone after the accident to a mechanic, the pilot admitted he ran the airplane out of fuel," the Record of Conversation reads.
