WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE â Residents in communities near the base may hear a variety of sounds â ranging from sirens, to âGiant Voiceâ audio messages, to emergency response vehicles â beginning April 29 through May 3 as the baseâs work force takes part in a quarterly exercise.
Visitors attempting to gain access onto the base, as well as base employees, may experience gate delays, temporary facility closures and interruptions to certain services related to the exercise. Tightened security also could result in delays throughout the installation.
Much of the visible exercise activity will take place during normal daylight duty hours. With the exception of brief periods of increased traffic congestion at base gates, most exercise activity will be transparent to the general public.
Carmen Riches, 88th Air Base Wing chief of exercises, said the goal is to blend in requirements from Air Force Instructions as well as put in place knowledge at the unit level and help Airmen know what to do for real-world response.
Unit deployment readiness and training will be evaluated, along with command and control, and effective communications. Selected Airmen will be called upon to demonstrate their knowledge and performance in wartime skills. A tornado exercise also is planned.
