Best and Worst Foods for Allergies

DAYTON -- Allergies make this time of year really tough for Krissy Mayes.

"When all the bugs come out and every time the season change," she said. "Itchy eyes lots of sneezing head pressure."

But she refuses to walk down the medicine aisle.

"I am kind of a non-medication type of person, so I suffer," she said.

When you walk into a store you might be tempted to go to the natural supplements aisle but it turns out the foods in your refrigerator can also help to fight off those allergies.

"Anything that's high in quercetin, which works as a natural antihistamine," said nutritionist Rhonda Miller.

That includes green leafy vegetables, such as:
- kale
- broccoli
- onions

She also recommends dark fruits, such as:
- purple grapes
- blackberries
- cherries
- red apples

She also recommends
- local honey
- fish
- warm drinks

Don't just think eating these anti-inflammatory foods once in a while is enough, you'll need to eat them on a regular basis.

"When you have the allergies you have a relief and maybe I can get my husband to eat these things too," said Suzanne Ramanujam of Miamisburg.

"I would always choose natural food alternatives instead of drugs any day," said Mayes.

There are some other foods that, depending on your allergies, could exacerbate the symptoms:
- peppers
- cucumbers
- bananas
- celery
- alcohol

"I want to stay away from sugar and dairy because those things cause more mucus," said Miller.
