Smartphone Apps That Promote Smoking and Target Kids

DAYTON -- Teaching your kids about the dangers of smoking is hard enough, but now with 100 smartphone apps that some say are pro-smoking, can make that job even harder.

We showed several apps to parents, and they were shocked by what they saw.

"What if you know kids really decide to try this and see how many cigarettes it takes to fill an ashtray, they would be so sick," said Kandace Stamper.

The concern is when kids play with the apps, it could lead them to the real thing.

According to the American Lung Association, those who decide to start smoking as a minor are more likely to keep smoking as an adult.

Another app lets you light up a cigarette and by blowing into the speaker of the phone or iPad, the cigarette smokes.

"For that to promote it when I'm trying to set an example for the kids, it's disheartening," said Stamper.

Another app that's upsetting parents is one that lets you chose one of several different pipes to smoke from.

And while the apps we found are rated for people 17 and older, it still worries some parents.

"My kids have access to my phone, they get on, they could easily go on there," she said.

The app world isn't regulated, but Stamper says it's up to her.

"Parents need to be more proactive in what their kids are doing and what they're going through," she said.

According to the American Cancer Society, there are more than 100 smartphone apps that promote smoking, and some are targeted to kids as young as 12 years old.
