UPDATE: Teacher Sentenced for Inapporpriate Relationship with Student

CENTERVILLE -- A high school teacher has been sentenced today to five years of community control after he pleaded guilty Wednesday to having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Michael Weaver, 43, was a government teacher at Centerville when he allegedly engaged in sexual activity during the victim's junior year. She is now an adult.

Weaver had been indicted on three counts of sexual battery (involving a teacher). He eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual battery on March 20.

He will also be required to perform 125 hours of community service and register as a Tier 3 Sex Offender.

Weaver also permanently surrendered his teaching license.

The victim in this case testified today during the sentencing and Weaver apologized to her and her family.

"This defendant abused his position of trust as a high school teacher and took advantage of that trust by having a sexual relationship with one of his students. As a community, we expect and deserve better from those entrusted with educating our youth," Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck said after the sentencing.
