Terrorism Expert: Good Thing Ricin Letters & Boston Bombs Not Related

DAYTON--With the Boston bombings and now poisonous chemicals going out to our officials, this week has given security officials a lot to work with. On the same day as the Boston bombings,  letters began going out to Senator Wicker and now President Obama containing Ricin. Ricin is a highly toxic protein and a dose as small as  few grains of table salt can kill an adult human.

At this time it doesn't appear the two events are related but, UD director of human rights research and terrorism and political violence analyst Mark Ensalaco says if it turns out the Boston bombs were a domestic act of terror we need to look more seriously on the domestic hate groups that may not organize terrorist operations but incite hate and violence in our everyday communities. He says the Ricin scares showcase the nightmares of security with so many ways for terrorists to attack.

"If you've got two sets of individuals both motivated by such hate that they are willing to kill people by explosives or kill people by poisoning, it's almost more frightening if they're separate entities," said Ensalaco. "You  have two streams of hatred going in a separate direction."

Ensaloco  says yes we are in a day an age of these kind of attacks, but we are in a day and age of technology and social media. He says it's only a matter of time before the guilty parties in these events will be found because as more and more pictures continue to come in, investigators will be able to piece together info that they can use to get the terrorist behind bars.
