DAYTON -- Thieves ransack a North Dayton home, stealing thousands of dollars worth of jewelry.
The burglary happened around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 400 block of Deeds Avenue. The homeowner came home just minutes after the burglars took off.
"I just couldn't believe that it happened," said John Hines hours after the burglary.
Hines' alarm was still going off when he returned home minutes after the burglars took off. He didn't catch them, but immediately called 911.
"She at that time told me that the police had been dispatched and for me to go outside and wait on the police to come in, that they could still be there, and it was about 3:35 p.m. at that time so I had just missed them," Hines explained.
Investigators say the burglars broke into the back window, went up the stairs and stole valuable items.
"Couple of necklaces that came up missing, mostly rings, anniversary rings and rings that I've gotten her (his wife) over the years, on cruises to St. Thomas," Hines said. "They are not replaceable."
In addition to the jewelry, Police say the thieves also took a Western pistol, a safe with collectors' knives and cleaning tools for guns.
The Old North neighborhood has seen its share of attempted break-ins. Many of them have happened in the last few weeks. A neighbor, who refused to go on camera, said someone tried to break into his home last week, but his dog scared them off.
Hines has lived in his home on Deeds Avenue for 38 years with his family and says nothing like this has ever happened. He and his wife are now taking extra steps to make sure their home isn't hit again.
"The threat of being a victim, not knowing what's going to happen, are they going to come back, will they ever come back," he said.
