Local Runners at Boston Marathon: We Spoke to One on the Phone

KETTERING -- There are runners from the Miami Valley in Boston right now, and were at the marathon when the two explosions happened.

The manager of "Up and Running" in Kettering says she knows at least 15 people in Boston, most of them were running in the race.

We spoke to her friend by phone, Nickie Luse.

"I had just met my sister in our meeting area and my parents were up in the stands and we had just all connected," said Luse, "We were walking downtown and heard what sounded like a big explosion but didn't know at the time what it was and then heard another one and we were on the other side of the building, the backside and kept walking and then we heard sirens going off and people were running and screaming."

Nickie's sister, Megan Folkerth, was running in the marathon for the first time, and had finished the race just 40 minutes before the bombs went off.

"They were very loud," she said, "Like it sounded like either a building collapsed or, not hearing a bomb close up it's not what you think it was. It was loud enough to shake everybody and know that something was happening."

Nickie works at Up and Running in Kettering, and her manager, Joan Cordonnier, found out about the explosions before it was even on the news.

"Susie the store owner was talking with Nickie on the phone and she says oh I'm fine, I'm fine, and Susie said what are you talking about and she said well the bombs that just went off, there were two bombs that just went off," said Cordonnier.

The news shocked everyone inside the store.

"After 9/11 you just never know what's happening," said Cordonnier.

But luckily for Nickie and her family, they are safe.

"Anything can happen at any time, it's just unfortunate that this historic event has to end in this type of manner," said Luse.

The store manager says she was able to get a hold of most of everyone in Boston that she knew, and they are all okay.

Her friend, Nickie, and her family are expected to travel back from Boston tomorrow.
