Dayton Native and Legendary Comedian Jonathan Winters Dies at 87

MONTECITO, Calif. -- The Associated Press is reporting that Dayton native Jonathan Winters has died. He was 87.

According to the AP, longtime family friend Joe Petro III says Winters died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes.

According to Winters' website biography, his entertainment career began in 1946 with a job as an early-morning disc jockey on WING radio in Dayton. He was first introduced to the masses in 1981 as the son of Robin Williams' character Mork on ABC's "Mork and Mindy."

According to the website, Winters was born in Dayton on November 11, 1925. He attended high school in Springfield and joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17. He served 2 1/2 years in the South Pacific and then returned to Ohio and attended Kenyon College.

He also studied at the Dayton Art Institute, where he met his wife Eileen.
