DAYTON -- About 100 people gathered Monday evening outside Dayton Children's Medical Center for a toddler who was taken off life support earlier in the day.

The vigil included candles and balloons to say a prayer for 19-month-old Takota Hasty.

"It just, it just tears me apart. Knowing he probably wanted me, his Dad, to help him and I couldn't be there," said Justin Hasty who is living every parent's nightmare.

Takota was beaten so badly, he had survived only by life support until doctors told the family he was brain dead.

At 4:41 he was pronounced dead.

"They are really monsters, I mean they burned all over him. They burned on him and there are bruises from head to toe. I know he was screaming and he wanted help but he couldn't get it," said Hasty.

The boy's Mom, Crystal Laurel, and her boyfriend, Dustin Rybak, are both accused of abusing the toddler, and are now facing charges in connection to his death.

"They tourtured that poor little kid, they tortured him," Hasty said.

Hasty called Police on Easter Sunday over his other little boy, a 4 year old. He brought him to be treated at Dayton Children's.

Montgomery County Children Services opened a case against the mother, but over the past week police were unable to locate her and she wasn't answering phone calls.

The next time anyone heard from Laurel was Sunday when she and Rybak showed up at Children's with little Takota, who wasn't breathing. Rybak describes himself as a "self-employed street pharmacist." He's on probation for heroin possession.

Takota's family's hearts are broken.

"I would never dream that they would do this to an innocent little kid, ever ... never, I mean he was such a sweet kid," said Hasty.
