WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House is reporting that President Barack Obama will return 5 percent of his salary in tribute to furloughed federal workers.

With more than 10,000 civilian workers right here at home taking pay cuts, we went and asked people in Fairborn what they thought of the move.

"Uh, it's a nice gesture," said Rob Fitch. But he said the move won't make a difference at all. "It doesn't affect people who have to get up and go to work every day," said Fitch.

By law, Obama's salary is $400,000. This year he will give back about $20,000.

The President will cut a check to the Treasury Department each month. The 5 percent cut started on March 1, but the President will write the first check this month.

Obama's total income, according to his 2011 tax returns, was $789,674. That figure includes his investments and book sales, which are not part of his 5 percent give back.

"I'm glad he is and I think more of our politicians should follow suit," said Betty Buhmann.

About 13,000 civilian employees at  Wright-Patterson Air Force Base will find out more about their furloughs on Friday.
