Dash cam video shows Capt. Barry Cron getting knocked several feet in the air. Reporter Liza Danver spoke with one of the drivers involved in the accident. After watching the video, he was shocked the firefighter is expected to be ok. Cron's injuries are considered serious though. He was responding to another accident when a truck slid on ice and plowed into him.
Ray Turpin was one of the drivers inolved in the 11 car pikeup.
"I tried to slow down. Hit a patch of ice and it started to fish tail. It went around to the left and then the right and I hit the guard rail," he said.
Ray's car is now totaled. Both ends are smashed up. But he considers himself lucky, especially after watching the dash cam video of what happened right before he wrecked.
Capt. Cron flew 30 feet into the air. He was basically knocked around like a rag doll.
Ray takes U.S. 35 to work every morning. The location where the pileup happened is part of a stretch of 35 that gets slick on a regular basis, even when street crews lay down salt.
"There's nothing they can do to prevent it from happening again. But you go ahead and heed the warnings about what the weather is and go ahead and slow even more down," Turpin said.
The fire chief says Cron has been with the department since 1992 and is a well-respected captain. The entire department is hoping for a speedy recovery.
