ROSWELL, N.M. -- Horses might be back on the menu if the federal government approves several slaughterhouses that will kill horses for food.
Plants in New Mexico, Missouri, Iowa and Oklahoma are planning to begin slaughtering horses if and when the USDA approves the practice, which it ended in 2007. That ban expired in 2011 and U.S. companies are trying to get back into the horse meat business.
Most of the meat would likely be exported to countries where the practice is less controversial.
